A new entomology video discussing western bean cutworm (WBC) biology, scouting and management is now available to view. The WBC is an active pest of corn in Ohio, and with recent reports of resistant WBC to Cry1F hybrids, it is more important than ever to monitor for WBC populations. Monitoring in traps targets adult WBC from late June through September with the peak flight typically occurring in July. By monitoring adult populations, we are able predict the peak flight and initiate scouting efforts for egg masses. For more information on WBC watch our video below!

When in the fields monitoring soybeans, we often see an array of bee species visiting soybean flowers. These bees can enhance yield even though soybeans are self-pollinating; but do we know what species are foraging Ohio soybean fields? And how far into soybean fields are bees foraging? To answer these questions, a survey was conducted during 2016 in eight Ohio soybean fields across the state.

Dr. Kelley Tilmon was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award in Extension at the 2017 Entomological Society of America North Central Branch meeting in Indianapolis, IN. This award honors a member of NCB-ESA member for excellence in extension. Dr. Tilmon's focuses on field crop entomology with an emphasis on integrated pest management. In addition, Dr. Tilmon serves as the director of a multi-state project funded by the North Central Soybean Research Program which provides research and award-winning outreach for soybean producers in the region. A new field guide will be available to assist producers and scouts identify and monitor stink bugs on soybean in the North Central Region beginning in January 2018. This field guide was developed by Land Grant Universities, the USDA, and the Soybean Checkoff. Bound copies of the field guide will be available at the land grant univerisities and soybean checkoff associations within the North Central Region.

We had a successful year trapping and monitoring the western bean cutworm (WBC) in Ohio. We want to thank the extension educators for their time monitoring the traps, as well as the land owners for allowing us to place traps on their property. Overall, 24 counties in Ohio were monitored in 2017; an increase from 15 counties in 2016. A total of 84 traps were monitored weekly from June 23 through August 25, 2017. A total of 15,117 WBC were trapped over the duration of the monitoring period, with a grand average of 21 moths/trap (up from 16 moths/trap in 2016).
