One of the most common pests we monitor for in our Ohio Lepidopteran Monitoring Network is the Western bean cutworm (WBC). The WBC caught the attention of growers across the state around 2017, when it became apparent that the caterpillars were developing resistance to the Bt trait in corn that had previously provided protection.

A poster was developed to present virtually at the 2022 annual Entomology Society of America Meeting titled "A Bioassay Method to Evaluate Efficacy of Insecticides Against the Asiatic Garden Beetle". This posted was developed by Amy Raudenbush, Adrian Pekarcik, Chris DiFonzo, Zane Raudenbush, Jon Witter and Kelley Tilmon. The Asiatic garden beetle is a pest of corn in sandy soils. The grubs feed on the corn seeds and roots in early development causing the plants to be stunted or even die.

Over the past week we have seen an increase in Western bean cutworm (WBC) numbers across Ohio. For the week of July 10 - 16, 22 counties monitored a total of 74 bucket trap for WBC adult moths. Three counties in northwest Ohio, including Defiance, Henry and Lucas, were all above the number (more than 7 moths), that we recommend to begin scouting for egg masses (Figure 1). Congratulations to Tilmon Lab members for their recent publication featuring the Asiatic garden beetle (AGB) grub. "Active and passive sampling methods for grubs of the Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in a corn-soybean rotation" was published in the March 2023 issue of Crop Protection. This research was led by Dr. Adrian Pekarcik during his time in the Tilmon Lab.

Tilmon Lab research on the 'Active and passive sampling methods for grubs of the Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in a corn-soybean rotation' was recently accepted and published in the journal, Crop Protection. This research was led by former Tilmon Lab Ph.D student, Dr. Adrian Pekarcik and included co-authors Amy Raudenbush, Eric Richer and Kelley Tilmon. The article focuses on AGB grub sampling in corn fields in northwest Ohio. The paper evaluates multiple sampling methods that growers/researchers could use to monitor for AGB grubs.
