  1. Western Bean Cutworm Moth Look-a-like

    Jul 31, 2023

One of the most common pests we monitor for in our Ohio Lepidopteran Monitoring Network is the Western bean cutworm (WBC). The WBC caught the attention of growers across the state around 2017, when it became apparent that the caterpillars were developing resistance to the Bt trait in corn that had previously provided protection.

  2. Raudenbush and Team Present AGB Bioassay Methods Poster

    Jul 27, 2023

A poster was developed to present virtually at the 2022 annual Entomology Society of America Meeting titled "A Bioassay Method to Evaluate Efficacy of Insecticides Against the Asiatic Garden Beetle". This posted was developed by Amy Raudenbush, Adrian Pekarcik, Chris DiFonzo, Zane Raudenbush, Jon Witter and Kelley Tilmon. The Asiatic garden beetle is a pest of corn in sandy soils. The grubs feed on the corn seeds and roots in early development causing the plants to be stunted or even die.

  3. Western Bean Cutworm numbers are on the rise in Ohio!

    Jul 18, 2023

Over the past week we have seen an increase in Western bean cutworm (WBC) numbers across Ohio. For the week of July 10 - 16, 22 counties monitored a total of 74 bucket trap for WBC adult moths. Three counties in northwest Ohio, including Defiance, Henry and Lucas, were all above the number (more than 7 moths), that we recommend to begin scouting for egg masses (Figure 1). An article titled "Preliminary Feeding Assessments for Asiatic Garden Beetle, Maladera formosae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Grubs and Adults" was recently published in The Great Lakes Entomologist Journal and authored by Adrian Pekarcik, Matthew Lorentz, C. Scott Clem, Amy Raudenbush, David Held, Kelley Tilmon.

  6. Asiatic Garden Beetle Sampling Methods Paper Published

    May 23, 2023

Congratulations to Tilmon Lab members for their recent publication featuring the Asiatic garden beetle (AGB) grub. "Active and passive sampling methods for grubs of the Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in a corn-soybean rotation" was published in the March 2023 issue of Crop Protection. This research was led by Dr. Adrian Pekarcik during his time in the Tilmon Lab.

  7. Asiatic Garden Beetle Grub Sampling Methods Paper Published in Crop Protection

    Dec 13, 2022

Tilmon Lab research on the 'Active and passive sampling methods for grubs of the Asiatic garden beetle, Maladera formosae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in a corn-soybean rotation' was recently accepted and published in the journal, Crop Protection. This research was led by former Tilmon Lab Ph.D student, Dr. Adrian Pekarcik and included co-authors Amy Raudenbush, Eric Richer and Kelley Tilmon. The article focuses on AGB grub sampling in corn fields in northwest Ohio. The paper evaluates multiple sampling methods that growers/researchers could use to monitor for AGB grubs.

    Dec 7, 2022

Congratulations to Kyle Akred, Tilmon Lab MS student, for taking 1st Place at the 2022 Entomological Society of America Student Oral Presentation Competition: Grad P-IE: IPM-Field Crops 2 section! Kyle's talk, titled "Determining the relationship between Asiatic garden beetle (AGB) grub density and damage to field corn" summarized his MS research in the greenhouse, microplots and field settings.

  9. Asiatic Garden Beetle Scouting Video

    Aug 5, 2022

A new video featuring Dr. Adrian Pekarcik was recently added to the Ohio State IPM You Tube page. In this video, Dr. Pekarcik addresses how to identify the Asiatic garden beetle (AGB) grubs, how to identifiy problematic areas in a field, scouting tips and management options.
